Definition of Business Intelligence
Business Intelligence can be expressed as a technology-driven process which is mainly
used in data analysis as well as in the presentation of information with the intention of aiding the
executive managers and other corporate users to make informed decisions pertaining to the
business. The business intelligence encompasses a diverse variety of tools and methodologies as
well as applications which help a company to collect data from various sources and prepare them
for analysis which can then be used to make decisions (Grossmann & Rinderle-Ma, 2015).
Business intelligence dates back to 1860s with the first proposal in 1989 that it is an
umbrella which is useful when it comes to the application of data analysis methods which helps
organizations in their processes of making business decisions. It is believed that business
intelligence emanated from the mainframe-based analytical tools which include the decision
support tools which are utilized mostly during business data analysis together with business
analytics. Additionally, business analytics referred to the advanced data analytics and made up of
the business intelligence and advanced analytics.
Real-world Application of Business Intelligence
Boosting Efficiency in an Organization

Business intelligence which leads to a creation of baseline of the performance. It also helps in
identifying challenges and judging the impacts of adjustments which enable the best solutions for
challenges are attained.
Quality control efforts
Moreover, business intelligence is used by manufacturers as part of their quality control
efforts which is utilized through examination of the metrics such as process time as well as
capacity utilization. This implies that the business intelligence helps in the prediction of failures
in the assembly line processes through the analysis of the results of the line returns (Management
Association; Information Resources, 2015). In essence, the predictive component of business
intelligence implies that failures can be corrected prior to discarding the costly recalls which in
turn can damage the reputation of the company.
Cost Reductions and Revenue Increase
Business intelligence as well can be used to reduce operations costs and increase
revenues. The manufacturing ring managers always debate whether the data they have are
appropriate when it comes to making decisions pertaining to the organization's process. With the
Business intelligence, they have the ability to provide the required insights which can be used in
understanding the correlations with the changes which are made between the processes and the
inventory as well as downstream financial outcomes.
Further, business intelligence can be depicted as an ideal too, which is useful in
illustrating the risk profiles as well as profitability in an organization. For instance, business
intelligence informs the manufacturing managers on the potential rewards and the risks which
might be encountered with the introduction of product line which are complex and which shos

the potential of being lucrative. The managers as well can gain the ability to attain economies of
scale with the use of business intelligence. This is due to the fact that they will understand better
the overhead costs which include the inventory turns and the dollars per unit costs. It also helps
to understand the costs of goods which in essence can lead to easy extrapolation of these costs
before expanding (LeBlanc, Moss, Sarka, & Ryan, 2015).
Most importantly, the organization growth can be made manageable to the managers
through the use of business intelligence. This is made possible since the bus...
