The Health Care Insurance Plans in Later Life
Health insurance is an ideal way of helping people to manage the cost of their health care.
Individuals pay premiums to health care companies, where a minimum amount of money is set to
be paid usually every month. The recipients later benefit by their health expenses being catered
for depending on the type of coverage that they choose. The coverage can extend from doctor
checkups, treatment of injuries to the management of long term illnesses. In the US, it is
estimated that 28.5 million people do not have health insurance plans at one point in their lives
(Berchick et al., 2018). The percentage of the covered people is approximated to be 91.2 percent.
In 2017, health coverage in private companies was more that the government coverage at 67.2
and 37.7 percent respectively. The most common coverage is employer-based insurance with an
average of 56% of the total population. These statistics demonstrate that the government needs to
address the issue of healthcare insurance to increase the coverage of the people. Notably, the
following analysis discusses the health care insurance plans in later life.
Medicare Part A
Medicare Part A includes most people at the age of 65 and who are already collecting
their retirement benefits from the Railroad Retirement Board or Social Security Administration
(eHealthInsurance Services, n.d). Their qualification is automatic under the two conditions.
People at this age may also qualify if they are disabled or have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or
end-stage renal disease. The conditions also require the beneficiaries to have legal permanent
residence in the US for at least five continuous years or are citizens of the country.



Medicare Part A covers various services. The hospital care coverage involves the
beneficiaries having their hospital expenses that are important to inpatient care is covered. The
services range from meals, nursing care, and semi-private room, specific medications that are
parts of inpatient treatment to any other supplies and services from the hospital. The homecare
benefits are covered when they are considered necessary which can include speech-language
pathology services, physical and occupational therapy, durable medical equipment as prescribed
