Jubal Anderson Early was born on 3rd November 1816 in Franklin County situated in
Virginia. Early lived with his mother Ruth Hairston and his father, a famous politician, and
farmer who owned many slaves. Due to that, Early was raised up in a plantation full of many
slaves. In 1833, he joined the United States Military Academy located at West Point. He
graduated in 1837 and managed to be the eighteenth student in a class of fifty. While at the
academy, he earned a great reputation that followed him throughout his career. His peers and
subordinates knew him as a quarrelsome and crabby old cuss thus nicknaming him Bad Old
Man. He lived as a bachelor but fathered children with a girl who was sixteen years of age.
