1. “Did Laurens do the right thing by submitting her story without the benefit of an independent
investigation into the mayor’s accusations about Councilman Michaels?”
Lauren did not do the right thing concerning submission of her story without doing due diligence
which would involve having an independent investigator look into the accusations made against
the councilman. Even though she had a deadline to meet she should have indicated that the
claims made by the Mayor could not be substantiated and then also include reporting of the
claims as opposed to simply presenting both sides of the story without proper investigation. Once
the claims had been investigated a report or story can then be done by Lauren.
2. “Is the mayor correct in arguing that Laurens acted responsibly by providing fair and
balanced coverage of both sides of a public controversy without trying to judge whose side is
right and whose side is wrong?”
According to the Mayor, Lauren’s reporting of the story was fair and justified since she wrote
