Wal-Mart is considered to be one of the largest retail companies in not only the
United States of America but in the world as well. The successful organization has managed
to apply different concepts which have driven the organization to where it is currently is.
Some of the conceptions which are highly applicable to this particular organization will
include leadership, organizational culture, the management of change and conflict, and
professional code of conduct. The company has managed to maintain a competitive edge over
similar companies in the retail industry. Furthermore, the regional growth and international
growth of sales have relied on the specified concepts which have also led the company to
maintain a competitive edge. However, various changes will still have to be carried since the
company has failed to apply multiple concepts that are highly essential.
Fundamentals of Leadership
In this particular organization, leadership will go hand-in-hand with management. The
managers will be regarded as leaders who will have to work daily further making sure that the
store operations are running smoothly. The same will also be applied when it comes to
warehouse operations. Leadership, as seen in the company, was first established by the
organization's founder, Sam Walton. The founder believed that effective leaders would not be
able to lead other individuals while they are sitting in front of the desks. This meant that for
one to be a leader, one had to work and interact with the employees as well as the senior
management to ensure that the operations were running smoothly. The interaction would be
regarded as taking the initiative to motivate the employees which will boost the employee
morale further leading to excellent customer service and an increase in the sales (Lussier, &
Achua, 2012).



Leadership, as observed in the organization, will feature store managers who will be
ready to serve the customers further improving the customer's experience at the store through
positive interactions. One fundamental aspect of leadership in the organization revolves
around teamwork where the leaders together with the followers, that is, the employees, will
work together as a team to benefit the organization as a whole (Bass et al., 2003).
The two main leadership styles which will often be employed in Wal-Mart will be
transformational and transactional leadership. Transformational leadership is regarded as the
central leadership used in the organization since the style's foundation was laid by the
founder, Sam Walton. Sam Walton was considered to be a transformational leader who was
also visionary. One of the ways which show the employment of this form of leadership will
focus on the CEOs visits to the retail stores.
Regular visits have been carried out by the CEOs as well as the senior officials. The
visits focused on making sure the operations run smoothly through actions that will be taken
swiftly to rectify any situation which may arise in the stores. Project impact is one other way
which will employ this leadership style. Project impact will focus on big decisions which will
have to be made and will have a significant effect on the company. Actions will be taken by
the organization to suit the customer preference, as well as, the feedback which has been
provided by customers and others as well. The leaders will also be willing to make a tough
decision which can be seen when the organization decided to close their retail operations in
Germany since the sales did not meet standards that had been set. The last way which shows
the use of this leadership style will focus on the development of a leadership pipeline which
has been done by a good number of CEOs (Bass et al., 2003).
Transaction leadership has been employed during the execution of strategies that will
highly be beneficial to the organization. This form of leadership has also been used during the



daily running of the business operations at the stores. One of the ways which show the
application of this leadership style will be through the promotion of individuals who will
have performed highly. Advancement in the organization has been done according to the
