Before World War II, the American workforce was predominantly male, women only
accounted for %24 of it at the time. However, when America joined the war effort,
millions of men left the workforce to join the military leaving a large labor shortage.
This labor shortage led to a massive influx of women working in jobs that had
previously been considered jobs that only men could handle. The participation of
women in the workforce had shown that women could perform in the same jobs as
men and should get paid just as much for it.
When the war ended and the men had returned home, female participation in the
workforce had plummeted to pre-war numbers. However, for the women still
working, there was an issue. Men were getting paid more for the same job with the
same duties and responsibilities. As a result, many bills were introduced during the
1950’s to address the issue of wage disparity on the basis of sex but failed to pass. It
