Explain how your genes affect your ability (or lack of ability) to digest milk.

Aug 4th, 2015

Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

Inability to digest milk is condition referred to as Lactose intolerance. This is a condition where there is impaired digestion of lactose containing food, mostly milk and milk products due to deficiency of lactase enzyme that is  produced on the walls of small intestine and it is required in lactose breakdown.. It can be primary or secondary.

GENE EFFECT

Primary lactose intolerance can be congenital in children or can be in adults with decreased lactase production or none. Is usually severe ,with diarrhea after milk intake.

Is caused by mutation of LCT gene that is responsible for lactase enzyme production. Leads to severe symptoms in infants

Decreased expression of LCT gene results in Lactose intolerence in adults. Since there is some lactase produced, symptoms are mild.

It is autosomal recessive.

can be inherited and is predorminant in people of Switzerland
