Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!
test for acetate
to the solution given, add lead ii nitrate solution, a black precipitate of lead ii nitrate is formed confirming the presence of the nitrate ions
TEST FOR CARBONATE
to the solution add dilute hydrochloric acid, a gas is produced that forms white precipitate
why would you need to confirm the presence of nitrate ions when we need to confirm the presence of acetate ions?
you add lead nitrate solution to obtain free lead ions to react with the acetate
thank you so much
I'm still not following, couldn't you add silver to test for acetate, if a precipitate forms then acetate is present, the precipitate formed would be silver acetate???!?!
yes silver acetate also precipitate but lead acetate will form black precipitate hence can be used still
So both are correct? what would form a precipitate with CO3??
the CO2 formed in carbonate forms a white precipitate with calcium hydroxide
thank you so much.
