Not to be outdone by Spain and Britain, France begins building its own North American empire, founding the cities of Montreal and Quebec on the St. Lawrence River Ohio Valley – important to have control of this b/c of trade. Three rivers come together. Whoever controls this area, controls the whole country from North to South. The continent as they new it at the time. 2. The French Crown seeks to enrich itself by gaining a monopoly over the fur trade in eastern Canada and the Great Lakes region. 3. While the Spanish want gold and slave labor from the Indians and the English want their land, the French trade peacefully with the Indians, selling metal tools and other goods… 4. French trappers called coureurs de bois travel deep into the Canadian woods in canoes and on snow shoes in pursuit of fur-bearing animals. 5. Th French push west and south in search of more furs, setting up forts and trading posts around the Great Lakes like Detroit, Presque-Isle, and Terra Haute (Indiana, further west) Side story: Native Americans created Lacrosse (1700’s) Played this game for 7-10 days. One side defending and one side attacking. The entire fort was mesmorized. People got excited and hooked. Used the game to distract the whole fort and ultimately kill everyone (French) in the fort. When French troops seize the Forks of the Ohio from the Virginians, Virginia’s royal governor sends a young militia officer named George Washington to tell them to leave. George Washington: Started out really low (private in the army). Sent him up from ports of Ohio to Ducesnge. Before he joined the army he was a surveyor. He mapped out the land and knew how to get to the fort to tell the French troops to leave. George and his men killed French Envoy (like an Ambassador today) and the Indians skinned the men. All hell broke loose and that’s the beginning of the French and Indian War. ...
