I would tell her how difficult establishing and maintaining relationships is for me.
Honestly, engaging with people has never been easy for me. Fostering relationships has not been
natural. I have always had difficulties finding way to connect, not only with fellow students but
also with teacher. However challenging fostering relationships seemed to me, her words have
been an outright encouragement and hope for me in my future career as an educator as well as a
college student here in Cuyamaca College. Through Rita Pierson’s speech, I have come to realize
that teaching is not about the teacher but rather the students. I now realize that, as a teacher, I am
supposed to recognize and sympathize with the different issues of students in order for my
