1. What are the three aspects that define soil as engineering material? Elaborate.
Geotechnical engineering defines soil as a three-phase material made of rock and
minerals, water and air particles. In the ground, there are spaces between the mineral
particles that hold water and air — the main engineering properties of the soil range from
permeability to compressibility and shear strength. Soil classification and identification
depend on the index properties such particle sizes as well as the soil consistency.
The geotechnical soil properties are important in soil engineering. These are the essential
factors that engineers use in deciding on the best soil to use in the works (Yang et al.
2016).
