Introduction
Data management refers to a series of organizational and administrative processes and
policies geared at ensuring that there is efficient data acquisition, validation, protection, storage,
and processing. In all these areas, the policies work to ensure that all standards and guidelines are
met. The major guidelines that need to be met include those at the data collection phase, those at
the data recording and documentation phase, those at the data preservation and storage phase,
and those at the data manipulation as well as data retrieval phase (Hoffmann, 2017). This paper
highlights some of the issues that need to be addressed throughout the process of data collection
through documentation and retrieval.
The data management plan entails assessment of existing data; getting information of
new data; quality assurance of data; backup and security of data; identification of challenges in
data sharing and how to solve these; consent, anonymization and re-use strategies; copyright,
intellectual and property ownership; responsibilities; and management and curation. Ensuring
these plan is executed as required ensures that the three core objectives of data management
including confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA) are achieved (Hoffmann, 2017).
Confidentiality is concerned with ensuring that only authorized individuals are able to access
data. Data integrity ensures that the information that reaches the reader is the intended message
from the sender to the receiver. The final element data availability ensures that data is safe to be
accessed by authorized individuals at all times, as well as ensuring that data retrieval is fast and
efficient.
On the side of the users, there is need to have extensive mechanisms of protecting the use
