The introduction of electronic healthcare management systems was meant to see the health
institutions able to have an ease of access of the medical records for their clients. This would
make it easy for physicians to quickly access the medical history of their clients when they visit
the institution for further treatment. However, some of the health care providers have been
reluctant to implement the same. Some of the reasons why there has been reluctance in the
implementation of the same include;
Cost
Implementation of any information system requires a large input of both and human resource
input. Monetary costs include; purchase, negotiation, monitoring, maintenance, and upgrade
costs (Reece 2011). This would, therefore, be difficult for the small to medium-sized institutions
to implement.
On the other hand, they need to have to have an internal IT team that would see the smooth
operation of the system. The small and medium organizations may, therefore, lack the capability
to finance such a system. Cost, thus, acts as the main barrier to the implementation of such a
system in the organizations.
Security
One of the codes of conduct for medical personnel is maintaining the confidentiality of patient
information. Some of the institutions are wary of the systems as they are prone to hacking and as
such, unauthorized personnel would have access to information that they are not supposed to.
Hacking may also lead to alteration of patient information (Ajami & Bagheri-Tadi 2013). This
would mean that the physicians would at some point get the wrong information regarding the

medical history of their patients. Wrong prescriptions could be made; as a result, leading to a
lack of guaranteed quality medical care for the patients.
Vendor trust
Electronic health record systems are still new in the market. Most of the organizations, therefore,
lack to trust the vendors who have come up to supply the same to the institutions. The lack of
