The Necessity of Airport Security Regulations
On a Tuesday morning, four passenger airplanes all departing from airports in the United
States were crashed, two into the World Trade center, New York, killing over 3000 people and
injuring thousands of others. In the worst terror attack in American history, airport security failed
to recognize Al-Qaeda terrorists and to protect the nation from terror attack. The day marked the
beginning of a long overhaul in security infrastructure and norms to incorporate more stringent
approaches to curbing terrorism. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) under the
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was formed following these attacks and mandated to
implement security measures to prevent such attacks amongst other security roles. Although the
TSA performs a great job in ensuring security in American airports and planes, one controversial
issue has been whether the detailed security checks are necessary and if they actually work to
prevent terror attacks. This paper looks into the TSA airport security measures and explains why
these checks are necessary.
The thought of going through airport security could make one think of jumping off a
bridge. This is especially so due to the levels of security checks that have to be implemented
before one is cleared to board. Several checking procedures are in place and they mainly include
x-ray scanners which screen baggage. Checking against a list of wanted persons is also required
for passengers. Additionally, the procedures include metal detectors for passengers, full-body xray scanners, and enhanced pat-downs for the passengers (Valkenburg and Van Der Ploeg 330)....
