Antisocial Personality Disorder




Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD) is a pervasive mental disorder that causes
individuals to have little or no regard for other people's feelings and emotions. Individuals
suffering from Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD) are informally known as ‘sociopaths,' and
they have no remorse or feelings of guilt whenever they cause harm nor empathy towards others.
The DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition) diagnosis
causes the affected individuals to manipulate others in unacceptable or unethical ways, engage in
criminal behavior that may lead to arrest or prosecution, or any other action that is in direct or
indirect violation of societal norms and ethics.
Symptoms of Antisocial Personality Disorder
Individuals who suffer from APD have a pattern and history of ignoring and violating the
rights of other people. They approach moral issues from a self-serving standpoint and display
aggressive and manipulative behavior when they need to achieve their desires.
Like all other mental health disorders, the severity of Antisocial Personality Disorder
ranks on a spectrum and may vary from habitual bad behavior to extreme irresponsibility and
criminal behavior. Psychopaths are considered to be suffering from an acute condition of
Antisocial Personality Disorder People with Antisocial Personality Disorder are usually
deceptive, manipulative and are susceptible to reckless criminal behavior.
Individuals diagnosed with APD should at least be 18 years, and should show the
following signs and symptoms;
a. They repeatedly behave in illegal ways that put them and others in danger
b. They put themselves and others at risk without thinking about the consequences



c. People with APD are moody and very impulsive. Also, they quickly get bored and may
find it difficult to keep a job for a long time.
d. Because of their aggressive behavior, people with APD easily get into fights and assaults
with other people.
e. Irritability and lack of remorse when mistreating others
f. In the early childhood years, before conduct disorder develops into APD, individuals may
occasionally be cruel to animals and setting objects on fire.
