Running head: KAMASI WASHINGTON
Description of the Artist/Groups Concepts and Ideas for Combining the International Music
Kamasi Washington is a big saxophone player who combines jazz and R&B/Pop.
Washington and his ensemble are considered a delight in the industry owing to their departure from
old-school jazz, but instead combines aspects of the old school of thought during performance with a
wide variety of instrumental solos, collaborative attitude, rich harmonies, and lightning-fast
saxophone lines (Hutchinson, 2018). Seemingly, Washington’s strength is derived from a
combination of different instruments to come up with an intricate form of melody and harmony.
Washington is credited with liberally fusing hip-hop, funk, Afrobeat, and electro-funk, which
incorporates the spiritual sound of elders like Pharaoh Sanders and the elements of collective
improvisation from Sun Ra, to theatrical film soundtracks of the 60s and 70s. As a result,
Washington does not consider his music jazz bit instead maintains that “the music is the music”
