DEMAND FORECASTING TECHNIQUES

Introduction
In the business world, there is a tendency of ripple effects to occur whereby one factor or
trend leads to an unending chain of reactions in different industries in different markets at the
same time. When this happens, some companies in specific industries benefit while others
experience catastrophic losses and even closure. That is why it is very important for business
leaders in every kind of industry to be vigilant of happenings within their area of specialization
and take the necessary steps to capitalize on the opportunities both in the present and in future.
Air freight is one such industry where vigilance is required. With the increasing globalization in
today’s business world, comes great opportunities and threats for airlines and airports in the USA
as well as other parts of the world. There is an increase in business activities and more
entrepreneurs, governmental units and households are demanding more efficiency in the
movement of cargo and few transportation modes can match air freight. This means that as more
business gets transacted and new markets in the Middle East and Asia open up, airports have to
be on top of their game in order to match the growing demand. However, there is also the
downside of demand unpredictability that is common in the air freight industry, and this makes
planning a nightmare.
Therefore, it is important that players in the air cargo industry are able to determine the
likely demand for air freight services and thus develop the necessary capability to satisfy that
demand. To this end, demand forecasting techniques have been developed and applied in the
industry for a long time now. The premise of demand forecasting is that a business can be able to
predict demand growth or decline through applying either or both of two strategies. One is to be
in a position to acquire customer behavior information which can be done through providing
questionnaires, interviewing them or getting an expert’s opinion on the same. The other approach

is to dig up past data on consumer behavior and other relevant economic factors and to subject it
to complicated sets of statistical techniques and analysis. That just proves how unreliably
inaccurate demand forecasting techniques can be given that available methods largely depend on
a judgment or making educated guesses. But there is really no other way that can provide the
measure of accuracy that the various techniques available can. That said, it is important to
remind ourselves that forecasting is important to any business because it enables the owners and
management to make informed decisions and employ effective planning strategies. In this paper,
we will venture into deeply analyzing a chapter on this topic and find supporting literature in the
form of peer-reviewed journal articles to contribute to the discussion.
