Question Description

For this discussion, you will have to share 2 images.

  1. One image from the textbook in Chapter 3 only; not from chapter 2.
  2. One image of your own choice from the San Diego Museum of Art's website: https://www.sdmart.org/collections/ (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

For each image, include the following information in "bullet" format (cut and paste the items below to use as your template):

Artwork information:

  1. Artist name
  2. Name of the artwork
  3. Date
  4. Medium (what it's made of....oil paint, charcoal, etc)
  5. Attach the image
  6. Style of Representation: these are the general forms/styles of representation, or how art “looks”. Describe how it qualifies according to one of the styles. You must describe details of the artwork; anything from color, texture, flat areas, 3-D areas, size, whatever it seems to you to discuss to back up your choice of style.

• Abstract
• Representational or Naturalistic: Idealized, Expressionist, Surreal
• Non-representational

  • FORMAL ELEMENTS and PRINCIPLES OF COMPOSITION: Identify the artwork in regards to the noticeable elements & principles with your new vocabulary; you don't need to address ALL of the elements/principles, just the ones that are dominant. Remember, now that we have a list of things to look for, we can identify them more easily. You MUST use the correct vocabulary (from the textbook) in order to earn credit.
    • FORMAL ELEMENTS: line, light and value, color, texture and pattern, shape and volume, space, time and motion, chance, improvisation and spontaneity.
    • PRINCIPLES OF COMPOSITION: balance, rhythm, proportion and scale, emphasis, unity and variety.

Make sure to respectfully comment on others' choices while replying: often we need more than one set of eyes to see the big picture.

Failure to provide all of the information above will result in loss of credit. Do not upload a document file; provide the information in the numbered format above.

ARTWORK INFORMATION
This piece of art was done in an era that was characterized by diminishing pharaonic
authority. Hence, it is a reflection of Egypt’s changing political and social affairs during that
period. All the decorative elements of the painting mark the events of the late 18th dynasty in Egypt
(Laboury & Connor, 2017). For instance, the king on the painting has the mark of earrings, a
common thing that started to emerge towards the end of the 18th dynasty.
Also, in the painting is the blue khepresh crown that the king is wearing alongside two
ribbons falling on his neck and a protective cobra that adorns the khepresh crown. Ideally, the
painter used mainly the red, yellow-ocher ink, as well as black highlights on the limestone to bring
out the satire in the painting. Thus, the image creates a unique opportunity to examine the historical
events that were present during its creation (Kang & Pashler, 2012). Although the surface of
limestone is considerably rough, this was the smoothest surface during the period of the painting.
The roughness of the painting surface did not deter the painter from obtaining an excellent
drawing on such a surface. Also, the painting of the king on the limestone resulted from the close
relationship between artists of the time and the royal dynasty (Laboury & Connor, 2017). At the
same time, they were employed to paint the tombs of the royalties which explains the choice of
the personality that is in this painting.

Style of Representation
Raphael’s style in the above painting and all his other works is the still-life style. He was
the first American to venture into using the style in his drawings making him become one of the
four greatest painters of the 19th century in America. This style, as is evident in the painting of a
basket full of peaches provides a new way in which people can view the things they consider
normal around them.

Tutor went the extra mile to help me with this essay. Citations were a bit shaky but I appreciated how well he handled APA styles and how ok he was to change them even though I didnt specify. Got a B+ which is believable and acceptable.
