Literature is the art of expressing thoughts an opinions using genres such as a song,
movies, poems and short stories to address some behaviors found in the society. In these case,
themes such as irony, appropriation, altruism, and symbols are applied to enhance the exchange
of information from the artist to the audience. This paper will analyze major themes applied in
the movie Trance, The Story of an Hour and Hunger Games to make a comparison on who
different themes have been expressed using various styles by the artists.
Trance
This 2013 British psychological thriller film was written by Joe Ahearne and directed by
Danny Boyle and screenplay by John Hodge. At the beginning of the movie, Simon who is an art
auctioneer is depicted as a key accessory to the theft of his own house painting. During a gang
attack at his house, he responded to the gang leader who sends him a blow to lose his memory.
Later the gang failed in their mission and sought to put Simon on treatment so that he can regain
his memory (Trance, 56). From the efforts done by hypnotist Elizabeth Lamb, Simon remembers
where he had placed the car keys exposing Franck’s motive to rob painting.
Later in the film, Simon finds himself in a dream where there is an exchange of series

the painting was. Further, the hypnotist uses her skills to alter self-realization in Simon and
Franks so that she can get away with the painting. This theme has been applied in the film to help
in turning how people think and achieve personal goals.
On the other hand, gender forms the greater part of the film. Upon the arrival of
Elizabeth, she was able to perform her duty and restore Simon’s memory. She later hides him in
her apartment and tries to get the painting for herself. She seduces the main character and has a
sexual relationship to win their confidence as well as gather confidential information. Females
can perform male duties perfectly when empowered. She further blackmails Frank and le...
