Please read the following overview of the topic and position assignment for the Debate Paper carefully.

Hypersexual Disorder/Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder are terms used to describe a range of maladaptive sexual behaviors. The disorder is not included in the DSM 5 or ICD-10 and there is disagreement among mental health professionals and conflicting research. Your task is to research Hypersexual Disorder/Sexual Addiction and argue AGAINST its inclusion in the next DSM/ICD revision.

Debate (Emerging Issues) Paper Instructions and Tips The instructor will select an emerging issue in abnormal psychology and assign you to either the "pro" or the "con" side of the debate via email. This assignment addresses the following course objectives: • Student should demonstrate the ability to evaluate emerging issues in abnormal psychology and determine their practical application in diagnosis • Student should demonstrate the ability to differentiate between methodologies and evaluate ethical considerations used in maladaptive behavioral research Here is the rubric for this assignment: Rubric for Debate Above Average Below Not Average Average Done The student showed a basic understanding of the emerging issue and of the research findings. 20 10 1 0 The student displayed an ability to criticize aspects 10 of the emerging issue and to present a side of the debate in a rational manner (for example, in justifying the use of a method with a selected population). 5 1 0 The student identified at least two critical 10 dilemmas and/or points related to the issue (for example, ethical/socio-cultural concerns). 5 1 0 Accurate and consistent use of APA Style for 10 citations and references when referring to that support supporting their side of the debate. Student referenced at least 2 scholarly, peer-reviewed psychology related journal articles. Page requirement met and not greatly exceeded. 5 1 0 The student defended his or her position with 10 compelling arguments and predicted future trends. 5 1 0 Total: 60 points Additional Tips for the Debate/Emerging Issues Paper • Locate at least 2 scholarly, peer-reviewed psychology related journal articles that address the emerging issue that you were assigned. Research should be fairly current (e.g. last 4-6 years.) If an older article is selected it should be balanced with a more recent article. • Read the articles carefully and pay particular attention to findings that support and oppose your position. • Carefully review the rubric—these are the criteria that will be assessed. Your paper should demonstrate critical thinking and compelling support for the position that you were assigned. • Papers should be typed, 3-5 double spaced pages. Introduction
Hypersexual behavior, also compulsive sexual behavior remains a widely debated
contemporary issue among mental health professionals and evidence-based research.
Hypersexual behavior is a range of maladaptive sexual disorders whose classification remains
unclear because clinicians fail to fathom whether it occurs as an independent condition or
resulting from other conditions. Because of this uncertainty in classification, mental health
professionals debate aggressively on whether to include the disorder in their Diagnostic and
Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders [5th Edition] (DSM-5) in the release of the next book
edition. The World Health Organization also excludes hypersexual behavior from its
International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Health Related Problems (ICD 10) with
raging debate on whether to list the disorder in their next edition. This article seeks to argue
against the inclusion of hypersexual behavior in the next DSM-5 and/or ICD 10 revisions.
