Electronic Medical Records
Electronic medical records are useful in many cases to store patient information and
allow close follow-up on issues of health. Other than the medical team at the hospital, the
government also uses these records for various purposes and this is mainly through the Medicaid
and Medicare programs. The utility of these records to the federal government, however, is not
well understood by many people and there is the need to highlight some of the ways that the
government finds these records important. The government uses electronic medical records to
survey and assess public health, provide coverage, and enhance meaningful use of technology in
the healthcare sector.
The main use of electronic medical records by the government is in coverage. Medicaid
and Medicare are health programs that provide coverage for specific populations such as the
elderly and low-income earners. To provide this coverage, the programs have to use the medical
records for reference. When explaining the concerns that providers may be using records to
commit fraud, Jennifer Bresnick (2019) explained that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid
Services (CMS) oversees the records to provide crucial information on the coverage of the public
and hence provides oversight authority to prevent fraud. The main use of electronic medical
records, therefore, is the overall presentation of medical information to the CMS for coverage
details to be set for both Medicaid and Medicare.
Moreover, the government oversees the security of medical records in the hospital
settings and provides proposals for the secure handling of the same. In a proposed rule to be
