This was a viciously racist white supremacist organization whose most popular agenda was
to establish a racial hierarchy. Their most brutal actions were mainly targeted at the AfricanAmericans. This group started in the South. They sought to achieve their agenda mainly through
the use of violence and terror. The Klan fought to maintain the slave trade and make sure that the
African-Americans remained subjects of the white population. The passage of federal laws in the
1870s marked the decline of the Klan. It, however, reemerged in the United States in the 1920s
following the end of the first world war. The membership rose to hundreds of thousands, and it
spread to all the parts of the country. This time, it used violence, threats of violence and
intimidation against the African-Americans, immigrants, Jews, and Catholics.
