  5. Using these databases, choose two peer reviewed journals for your area of professional focus. Explain why you chose these two specific journals. Addressing each separately, what is the journal’s focus? Go to the journal’s website, find the link to submit an article or the publishing criteria, how do you know this is a peer-reviewed publication?
  6. Find two professional organizations on the Internet; one for nursing leadership and one for your specific professional focus (Executive, Educator or Legal Nurse Consultant). Explain to the reader why they are authoritative and reliable sources of information.

College of Health Professions MSN 6500 Leadership Roles in Nursing Information Literacy and Leadership Paper Instructions Many nurses have had the experience of a patient bringing them an internet article on treatment or procedure that seemed sketchy as far as reliability. With access to the internet there is a multitude of less than reliable information free for the taking. As a nurse leader you have an especially high bar before you promote a new practice recommendation. Knowing what is authoritative and reliable is essential. One of the competencies you will need to develop at the graduate level of practice is the ability to discern what is valid and credible from unsupported, unreliable information. That is just one reason you are expected to use primary sources in citation support for your papers. In contrast to primary sources, a secondary source* is merely a third person’s interpretation of what the author said and you can’t be sure what they interpret is correct without viewing the author’s original article. So when you read an article and someone says, “Jones found that Knowles thought adults…” you cannot rely on Jones, you must go to Knowles article and read it for yourself. Or in your textbooks, when the author talks about research conducted by someone else, you have a duty to refer to the citations in the back (to pull the original article) and confirm if what the textbook author concluded is correct before using their opinion for citation support. You also know that you are looking for information in peer-reviewed journals that has been published within the last five years to support your papers. Nursing is anything but stationary in practice so advancements are constantly being made and research findings overturned. If you rely dated literature you may be counting on information that is no longer valid and will yield poor, unsubstantiated results. It is your reputation and credibility that is on the line as a leader. Using APA 6th edition format, in a 4-5 page paper (not including the cover and reference page in the total count), please address the following areas: 1) Briefly discuss why, as a nurse leader, you need to be sure of the information you disseminate to patients, their families, and your staff. 1 InfoLit.Ldrshp.kld Instructions 7.2016 College of Health Professions MSN 6500 Leadership Roles in Nursing Information Literacy and Leadership Paper Instructions 2) Explain how you can determine authoritative sources (those that are reliable and credible) that you retrieve from the Internet. Explain to the reader why they are authoritative and reliable sources of information. This paper is due on or before Sunday evening of week 4 by 11:59 p.m. Submit in the designated assignment link in week two where you pick up this assignment (no emailed papers will be accepted). For your convenience, an APA template for your paper has been provided. *There are three exceptions to using studies older than five years. 1) The original study is no longer available to view… this is truly rare as the internet has been indexing older literature for years. If you think you have this situation, reach out to the librarians for assistance. They are experts as locating information, are more than willing to help, and you can do this from home via the website. 2) You are relying on a “hallmark” study. This is a study that you keep seeing referred to in the literature, so the information has stood the test of time. For example, Knowles theory of andragogy (adult learning principles) was written in 1980. Because you need 2 InfoLit.Ldrshp.kld Instructions 7.2016 College of Health Professions MSN 6500 Leadership Roles in Nursing Information Literacy and Leadership Paper Instructions to rely on the original source as we discussed above, you would have a citation from Knowles dating back to 1980. 3) The concept or theory is so under researched or studied, there is little literature available that is current. Again, this is when you contact the librarian for assistance as it may be a matter of lack of experience with searching for this topic that is preventing you from finding the information. If after contacting the librarian, they are unsuccessful in locating more recent information, you may have to then rely on the limited studies you can find. You should however, explain to the reader, why you are relying on older studies. 3 InfoLit.Ldrshp.kld Instructions 7.2016 Running head: EXAMPLE OF AN APA PAPER Title of Paper Name of Student University 1 EXAMPLE OF AN APA PAPER 2 Abstract An abstract is a summary of the paper that should be 250 words or less. It is not the same as the introduction. This will be the only paragraph in your essay that is NOT indented. It often contains topic, methods of research, discussion of literature, and conclusions. Please ask your instructor what he or she wants to see. EXAMPLE OF AN APA PAPER 3 Title of the paper again – should match the title page Here is the body of your paper with everything that your instructor is asking for. Again, your teacher should detail for you which aspects of the research process should be detailed here. One helpful hint that cannot be stressed enough: develop your References page as you go. Every time you use someone else’s work, first put in an in text citation and then enter it onto your References page. EVERY TIME. It takes a little bit more time in the short run, but will save you lots of time in the long run. Work smarter, not harder…. EXAMPLE OF AN APA PAPER 4 References Dowling, B. (2009, November 17). Books have different elements than online journals than sources from a library database, etc.

INFORMATION LITERACY AND LEADERSHIP PAPER
Information literacy and leadership paper
Information has become increasingly accessible with the advancement of technologies
like the internet, social networks, and digital publications. While this comes as a benefit to the
healthcare sector, it also raises the chances of accessing poor quality information that could
jeopardize service delivery. It is thus important for nurse leaders to ensure that themselves,
patients, and other stakeholders have access to reliable information.
As a nurse leader, one needs to be sure of the information that they disseminate to
patients, their families, and the staff. The reason behind this concept is that the healthcare
industry has become more data-centric and information-driven in that it relies heavily on the
information that the healthcare providers collect from the patients and how well they can
work on this information. Research has shown that many errors that occur in the healthcare
industry are a result of unreliable information, insufficient information, and misinformation
(Granter & Papke, 2018). In fact, the healthcare industry has no room for unreliable
information as the results could be devastating. Patients need information in order to
understand how to remain healthy while families also need reliable information to enable
them to care for their patients. On the other hand, correct and reliable information should be
shared seamlessly among staff members so as to promote collaboration and ensure quality
services are delivered.
