Describe a social theory that was discussed in the “Social Relationships and Health”
journal article and indicate how it was used to support the research.
Social relationship is one of the social theories that were described in the article by
House, Landis, and Umberson (1988) and whose selection is based on its influence on the
maintenance of the health and wellbeing of an individual. According to the scholars, social
relationships play a significant role in the quality of life that a person would enjoy due to its
effect that was stated earlier. Also, the outcome of the research studies showed that the potential
for individuals who are not integrated socially to commit suicide is higher their counterparts that
highly integrated into the society. Finally, House et al. (1988) supported their claim on the
impact of social relationship on the health and wellbeing of people by stating that the outcome of
their cross-sectional survey of the general population revealed that people that experience illhealth were found to have fewer and non-meaningful relationships with people.
