  1. Discuss the principles related to the occurrence and transmission of communicable and infectious diseases.
  2. Describe the three focus areas in Healthy People 2020 and the objectives that apply to communicable and infectious diseases.
  3. Identify and discuss nursing activities for the control of infectious diseases at primary, secondary and tertiary levels of prevention.
  4. Identify and discuss a communicable and/or infectious disease that it was believed to be eradicated and have reemerged now. For example; measles.

Principles related to occurrence and transmission of communicable diseases.
Disease occurrence describes how often a disease event occurs in a population and
disease transmission is how a pathogen is passed from an infected person to a healthy
individual in a population causing a communicable disease (Hawker, 2012). There are
several principles that are related to transmission and occurrence of communicable
diseases as discussed below.
The biological and epidemiological principles include spectrum of infection,
multicausation, stages of infection and spectrum of disease occurrence. The first stage
is multicausation whereby an infectious agent alone is cannot transmit a disease but
there must be an interaction of an agent, host and environment. Therefore transmission
occurs when an infectious agent (microorganisms which easily adapt to changing
conditions) leaves the host (Human population) through an exit and gets into a
susceptible host through a portal entry. This is called the epidemiologic triangle (Van,
2002).
Spectrum of infection is another biological principle of disease transmission
whereby one may get into contact with an infectious agent and fail to get an infection
and not all infectious disease are caused by an infection. Subclinical infection...
