The choice of theory that nurses make affects how care is planned, delivered and how
patients are assessed, the process of theory selection should not be taken lightly. There are
specific and very critical aspects that nurses have to consider before they select a theory in their
service delivery (Güner & Pehlivan, 2016). Inability to analyze the various approaches would
translate into poor health care and menial nursing practices (Liou et al., 2016). The selection
criteria for a nursing theory include the clinical setting, the origin of the theory, the paradigms as
a basis for the theory, simplicity, the patients’ needs and understandability. Hildegard Peplau’s
theory in nursing care for the mentally ill will be adopted after a close analysis of the key criteria
listed above.
Clinical Setting
The clinical setting aspect simply means that the theory used in the nursing care delivery
should be in line with the contextual factors in the situation at hand. Theories are used as maps in
nursing care and are meant to be different depending on the specific terrain the nurses find
themselves in (Kim & Ko, 2015). A theory can only be used if it fits well to the structure and the
functions that accompany a specific health care situation (Liou et al., 2016). The clinical setting
