Question Description

This week you will respond to two writing prompts that ask you to take a closer look at the themes present in the short stories you read. You will write two paragraphs (at least five sentences each), one for each writing prompt.

  1. You could argue that one theme in “Lullaby” is healing and recovery. Do you agree or disagree? Point to specific evidence in the story that supports your position.
  2. “The Red Convertible” offers many symbols that hint at Henry’s state of mind. First, there is the car that tracks Henry’s character progression: stable, up on blocks, damaged, and drowned. Then you have the river, which is beautiful, overflowing/dangerous, and tumultuous beneath the surface. Why might Erdrich choose these symbols and what does it explain about the trauma of war?
