Kaiser Permanente (KP) is one of the largest non-profit health care organizations in the
United States which serves over eight states, and its headquarters is in Oakland California. The
organization serves over 11.7 million health plan members. The company started in 1945 by
Henry J Kaiser together with physician Sidney Garfield. The eight states which the eight states
which the Kaiser Permanente operates include Colorado, Georgia, Washington, Hawaii,
California, Maryland, Oregon and the District of Columbia. According to Silvestre, Sue, &
Allen, (2009), the organization had over 300,000 employees who are working in over its 728
medical facilities which are distributed all over the eight states. KP has been rated to be one of
the most competitive and leading hospital in the USA due to the high-quality services it offers to
the clients. KP focuses on preventive health care. KP pays its doctors on a salary basis rather
than fee for service with the aim is to encourage quality service delivery.
Additionally, Kaiser Permanente is the best health care facility to the low and middle
class because it offers high-quality services at a low cost thus making its health services to be
more affordable. Around the country, Kaiser Permanente is recognized as one of the best health
care facility, which serves to ensure excellence in its respective health facilities across the state.
As from the fourth quarter of 2017, Kaiser Foundation Health care plan and Kaiser Foundation
Hospital entities reported $ 3.08 billion. KP is made up of three separates but closely
cooperating entities which include Kaiser Foundation Hospital Plan (KFHP), Kaiser Foundation
Health, and Permanente Medical Group (PMG). Kaiser Foundation Health Care Plan and Kaiser
Foundation of Health and Kaiser Foundation Hospital Plan (KFHP) are non-profit organization
while Permanente Medical Group (PMG) is a profit organization. Silvestre, Sue, & Allen,
(2009), states that the three entities share their responsibilities in organizing, financing and



providing high quality and delivering prepaid health care services to the clients and the
community at large.

According to Díaz, & María, (2012), SWOT analysis is an acronym of strengths,
strengths, opportunities, and threats. The SWOT analysis is critical to any organization success.
It helps the organization examine its internal capabilities and reflect it in a competitive
environment. Swot analysis will help Kaiser Permanente to determine its strengths, weakness,
opportunities, and threats. To improve its competitive ability, Kaiser Permanente should
maximize opportunities, strengthen its weaknesses and minimize or eliminate its threats.
