Team Design Assignment #1
Redesign the college education experience. What elements would
you change? How would you change them?
Why spend the money and time when everything can be
completed from home? Why not get real world experience?
Colleges here in America will provide students with all the skills almost every
job requires; however after the final exam students will never need to know
what they spent an entire semester learning ever again. Many people will argue
that colleges make you take the different general education courses to “enrich”
our lives for the real world and not just for our jobs. An experiment was taken
by educational psychologists that wanted to search for the “hidden benefits” of
the vast courses students took throughout their college careers. Unfortunately,
when putting students to the test, their abilities to apply the knowledge they
have learned and studied for months was extremely low.
List of Alternatives
1. Students should work in companies/have hands on experiences that will apply
credits towards their graduation.
Reason – Every job or company is different and uses a variety of systems. This will give more
exposure for students to the real world.
2. More online classes should be available, less on-campus visits
Reason – Having accessibility anywhere you go will save students and colleges more
time and money.
3 Students should pay lower amounts per class/credit
Reason - If students spend less time on campus and spending time at corporate offices
then the cost to maintain building should be lower which can help the cost per credit to
Our Chosen Alternative
We believe it is more important for students to have more hands
on experiences/internships, than it is for students to take a
variety of general education courses.
Explanation of Chosen Alternative
Our idea is that instead of taking classes not at all related to your major,
applying for different companies you are planning on majoring, during your first
and second year, will substitute for all credits/general education courses.
Doing this will count for real world experiences that will help students for
their future careers in the long run.
This will also help students decide whether they want to continue pursuing
their desired career
Ex: Maybe you think you want to be an accountant? You start your days
working for the companies and after that “semester” ends you realize you
absolutely hate working at a desk all day. You can immediately change your
major AND receive credit for the time you spent working there. Now you have a
real world experience whilst getting your degree.
Implementation and Conclusion
We believe that allowing students to go out in the workforce is only positively
impacting their lives in many ways. This is a great way for students to take a
mini glimpse into their future, to see if it is really for them. They are able to
visualize real life experience, gaining proper knowledge and fundamentals on
how to have a real career. They are saving time being able to switch up their
majors immediately if they realize it is not for them. Taking this route into all
college universities will better students responsibility and leadership roles in
