Post Discussion: Diversity in College Athletics & Your Life (2 Parts)

College campuses often times represent some of the most unique and diverse environments. As an Athletic Director you must establish and assess how well your athletic department is demonstrating inclusiveness, as well as delivering opportunities where progress toward inclusion can be made. In this discussion, you will discuss your understanding of inclusiveness and how athletic directors deal with identifying areas of improvement.

Part 1: In your initial post, assume you are an Athletic Director on a college campus. Discuss how you would demonstrate your sensitivity to, awareness of, and understanding of inclusiveness as it relates to gender, faith, race, etc. on your campus within the scope of the programs under your direction. How do you demonstrate inclusiveness as it relates to the mission, vision and values of your college?

Part 2: Exercise 9.1. Answer the six questions about personal diversity on page 197 (Petrie, Hankes, & Denson, 2011) and post a reflective summary.

Support your statements with evidence from the Required Studies and your research. Cite and reference your sources in APA style.

gender, sexual orientation, age, physical abilities, religious orientations, socioeconomic status,
political stands, as well as other ideologies. Diversity, therefore, means the exploration of these

demonstrate my sensitivity to, awareness of, and understanding of inclusiveness as it regards to
gender, faith, race, and many other dimensions. More than just acknowledging and appreciating
difference, I will ensure a set of conscious practices, including understanding the
interdependence of humanity, cultures, as well as the natural setting, practicing mutual respect
for experiences and qualities that are different from mine, and building alliances across
differences to work together with students in eradicating all forms of discrimination.
In terms of inclusiveness, I will seek to create an environment where each athlete
member is valued. Additionally, within this environment, I will make sure that I anticipate and
encourage athletes’ diverse perspectives, and at the same time, leverage on them to foster
creativity and innovation among different athletes. In this case, promoting a culture of inclusion
will be a process that will start with acknowledging the differences amongst us and the fact that

understand that by committing myself into fostering a culture of inclusion among the team,
members will continually be able to design, review, and build structures that are all-inclusive,
accessible to all, and equitable; thereby, decreasing the need for accommodation a...
