“The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.”
The above quote by George Orwell is 100% true. There are many historical examples that prove the veracity of this statement but one immediately comes to mind. About 500 hundred years ago a group of people "discovered" a new land. They ripped off the people they found in every way possible. Rape and murder were just the beginning they. They raped and killed to their hearts content. As the years went by, their crimes were so perfect and they were able to quiet their victims to such an extent that eventually the victims were even told their language sounded weird so the need to learn the language of the rapist. Furthermore they were told that their gods were stupid. So they were told to adapt the god brought over by the murderer.
Go to any country in Latin American and you will find that I am not exaggerating; most people there speak Spanish and pray to god brought over by the Spanish. People in the America's were taught to forget their language and religion. Most people in Latin American don't understand their own history. Thus, Orwell was right.
Look over this list of groups and consider which group you would like to focus on during this course and in your Final Project: Which is best.
- African Americans
- Native Americans
All of the above groups have been oppressed throughout history. However, Native Americans have probably been the most neglected. When they are studied, they are hardly ever ever seen as victims of probably the largest genocide in history. In fact, when we think genocide, we think Hitler and hardly ever what we as Americans did to the people that got here first.
