Smart Swarm
Miller in his article defines Smart Swarm as a group of individuals who respond to their
environment and each other in a way that empowers them as a group so they can cope with
complexity, uncertainty, and change (Miller, 2010). There are types of animals that work as a
group. These are some of the animals that he explores in his book; locusts, ants, birds of feathers,
termites, and honeybees. From each animal, he tries to extrapolate a lesson that each can teach
us. In his discussion, he is trying to elaborate on four principles of smart swarms that he believes
can reel in profits for company owners. These are self-organization, adaptive mimicking,
diversity of knowledge, and indirect collaboration. This Smart Swarm concept has been taken up
by different organization wish to develop technology that works in a similar way. This paper
looks at Miller’s concept and some of the technologies working the same way.
