Examine St. Aelred of Rievaulx's contribution to Western Civilization.
St. Aelred of Rievaulx was born in the year 1110, in Hexham Northumberland, and
died on Jan. 12, 1167 in Rievaulx Abbey, Yorkshire. He was a writer, historian and
outstanding Cistercian abbot who introduced monasticism in Europe countries such as
England, Scotland, and France. Cistercians celebrate him on February 3, for his contributions
towards their culture (McEvoy, 2010, p. 26). Aelerd was raised at King David 1 of Scotland
court. He was the adviser to the king and helped them make several decisions. His writings
are considered to be among the best in Europe and have highly influenced western
civilization. Western civilization is a set of customs, political systems, and events that are
found in Europe and the culture of the west, i.e., America.
St Aelred contributed towards western civilization in a significant way. He inspired
people to love God and desire God more in their life. Many people in the culture desire to
have God as their friend. In his life, despite the troubles he goes through, his love and desire
for God cannot be doubted. He argues that friendship exists as a means of achieving and
enlightening union that represents and leads to divine love. His love for God is evident in his
writings and the relationship with the people around him. He lived this life both as a monk
and an abbot. According to him, friendship is a way to God and should be rooted in love for
