Problem Statement

According to the PMI’s Pulse of the Profession (2017), the lack of clearly outlined and stated project goals is the most common reason, at 37% that causes project failure, translating to organizational failure as well (PMI, 2017).  The report further indicates that for any project to ultimately attain its goals, it has to be highly aligned to the intended and right strategy; showing a success rate of 77% (PMI, 2017; p. 3). This, therefore, means that project goals ought to be clearly stated from the word go during the planning phase to enable project team members and the managers have a sense of direction hence fostering success. Since this is not the case, there is a need for a review on what project managers can do to significantly increase project success rates, a factor that will ultimately lead to organizational success.

Purpose Statement

The purpose of this quantitative study is to find out the effect of strategic planning, sufficient resources and effective strategy implementation on project success rates. Projects can have a high rate of success if potential failures are identified beforehand. The two factors, strategic planning, and effective strategy implementation are inspired by Cândido and Santos (2015), who articulate the importance of incorporating strategy and strategic planning in the overall project management process and the 2017 report by the PMI’s Pulse of the Profession. From the findings of this research, project managers will be able to maximize performance efficiency by identifying viable strategies and processes that contribute to project success. Data will be collected by interviewing several project managers working in various industries and sectors to understand how to increase the rate of success of organizational projects. Organizational leaders and project managers are the main beneficiaries of this research which will aid them to enhance skills, knowledge and practical practices to maximize performance efficiency by identifying successful processes, strategies, and tools.
