1. The Central Pacific and the Union Pacific were the two private companies that
constructed the transcontinental railroad. They each worked from one end of the states
with a plan to meet in the middle to connect the east and the west. Building the railroads
was expensive, and the government paid large amounts of money to the construction
companies. Also, the government provided the two companies with land grafts. It would
offer land as alternating square mile sections along each mile of track laid. The
companies held onto the land they were given until they determined a route for the
railroad to pass. These companies benefitted from these grafts because of increased
settlements along the railroads. The completion of the transcontinental railroad was
marked with a golden spike in 1869. The completed railroad opened trading and
migration between the east and the west. Also, it led to towns alongside the rails

captains of industry are well known for their generosity in giving back to society.

that are strong enough and willing to survive to remain alive. This theory tried to tell the
gap difference between the poor and the rich in developing America. The civil war had its
effects seen by many but soon after only a few were able to pick themselves up and have
a better life. The government’s effort in providing help to the poor was met with
resistance from those who used the social Darwinism theory. They argued that the weak
were so naturally and hence they should be left alone to go extinct. This theory was also
used to explain the discrimination against race and nationality as immigrants from nearby
