Module 2 Reflection: Alcohol and Drugs The ted talk is lead by Ethan Nadelmann who is the founder of the Drug Policy Alliance. In his talk, “Why We Need To End The War On Drugs”, it pertains to how the world and different states are affected by the legalization of drugs. He makes an important point when saying this particular line,”It is particularly galling to me as an American that we’ve been the driving force behind this global drug war.” Nadlemann explains that marijuana use is now legal in almost 50 states and that millions of people can purchase marijuana through medical and government licenses. This means that it is the government’s fault for allowing the use of Marijuana. He makes an appeal that if the US follows in the footsteps of Russia and South America then they would optimize their economic potential because drugs will be regulated properly and cause economic growth. If they follow in Russia’s footsteps when it comes to their economic goals, there will be a decrease in crime and the black market. Nadlemann explains that people would like to legally sell and tax marijuana and treat the drug as though it is alcohol as Colorado and Washington are doing. “There has probably never been a drug free society” “we use drugs to deal with pain, increase our energy, socialize and even commune with god.” This is true because there will always be a demand for drugs for whatever reason it may be. What was most interesting to me was when he said that the solution to the problem is to learn how to live with drugs. Also, America’s ethical system is bias when it comes to their laws of drug use. In other parts of the world, the culture is polar to Americas. For example, South America and Russia are both entities of which the American culture despises and strives to be. The use of drugs in Russia are strict, punishable, and limiting to their economic growth so that the government gets the upper hand to control it’s citizens. America is similar to Russia in that sense and America strives to be like them. As to South America, America despises their approach to drug laws. South America uses their drug trade to control their government and how they regulate economic flow. In conclusion, Nadelmann, wants America’s culture to change. He goes against their regulation but understands where they are coming from in terms of the market. However, it is not “morally” just for a country to run on illegal substances. War on Drugs
The TED talk “Why we need to end the war on drugs” is delivered by Ethan Nadelmann,
a drug policy reformist and founder of the Drug Policy Alliance. Primarily, the talk discusses the
increased war on drugs and the impact it has had on society. He starts by saying, “what has the
war on drugs done to the world? Look at the murder and mayhem in Mexico, Central
America…” Nadelmann argues that fighting drugs has proven to become a costly endeavor and it
is only set to get worse as the pushing goes on. His solution to this problem is to put an end to
the drug war. Whereas some of the arguments Nadelmann presents are questionable, I agree with
him that the war on drugs needs to come to an end because it is causing the world more harm
than good.
First and foremost, drugs will always be there. The issue of drug use and abuse is not a
problem that has been created by this generation. Nadelmann says, “There has probably never
been a drug-free soc...
