Two Short Essays You will have two short essay questions and respond to them. Each short essay should be about two to three double-spaced pages. You should write your short essays in MS Word and submit/upload each essay as a MS Word file (Short Essay #1 and #2”). You will not receive extra credit for writing more than two short essays. Your essays will be checked for plagiarism using Turnitin. Please remember that I will not tolerate any plagiarism under any circumstances in this course (see plagiarism section of the syllabus). If you plagiarize, you will be caught and seriously penalized. These short essays will be based on conceptual/analytical questions and your responses should be more than mere summary of lecture material or readings. Instead, you must analyze and use course material in order to support an argument (your answer to the question). Since these are short essays, they do not always have to follow standard essay format (introductory paragraph, thesis statement, three body paragraphs, a conclusion, etc.), but they should have some type of introductory section (that clearly states your argument/answer to the question) and concluding section. Your essays should use both lecture material and readings (they should not simply rely on one or the other). Of course, if you simply write these essays off the top of your head based on your general knowledge about immigration/ethnic relations or what you remember from the class/readings, they will be too vague. You must go over the lecture materials and readings and make sure you use specific materials from the course to support your general points. All direct quotations from the readings and lectures should be cited, as well as when you paraphrase what is said/written in them. For quotations from readings, cite by indicating the author and page number in parentheses, for example, (Cornelius, p.296). No bibliography or a list of works cited is necessary at the end of your essays. If you wish to cite a lecture, indicate the lecture topic and date, for example, (Lecture on Economics of Immigration, January 30). Your essays should be based on class material and should not rely on external readings and sources. However, if you do so, you must cite them in parentheses and list the sources at the end of your essay. Grading: Your essays will be graded based on the following criteria: a) Quality of Argument/Analysis (35% of grade): Is the student answering the essay question with a coherent argument and analysis? b) Use of Course Materials (35% of grade): Is the essay based on lectures and readings? c) Organization and Writing (30% of grade) Is the essay well-organized and written?

Factors causing International Migration
There are mainly four factors that basically cause migration and not just any but international
migration. These factors do include the following: economic pressures, social networks and
connections between migrant sending and receiving countries, immigrant admissions and
admission policies, and cultural perceptions people in developing countries have about
immigration and First world immigrant-receiving countries. All these factors when they come
together to cause the migration flow witnessed yearly or maybe monthly in our countries. The
question is how do these things work in order to bring about this flow?
Starting with the issue of economic pressure which can certainly be broken into
different bits which are the kind of employment opportunities in the country, the labour
standards in that country and generally the health of the economy. People tend to move to an
economy where there are no threats of it crumbling to bits, they will obviously seek a place
with a better economy and employment opportunities. These days people are drawn to
international migration due to the fact that they have a better chance of getting better salaries
or wages, better employment opportunities and a good environment for business. Take an
