As the Director of Operations, it is my responsibility to work together with all
departments so as to set up a collaborative and cross-functional company. The Management
Information Systems (MIS) has been assisting in organizational management and other
activities, such as in the processes of strategic planning and decision making. The technology
used by the Management Information System is very important for the business operations of
the company, especially in the strategic planning and decision-making processes.
Data Mining As a Competitive Strategy
Data mining and assessment is a technology that is associated with business
intelligence (BI) and works together with the Online Analytical Processing or OLAP, the and
data warehouse. Data mining technology can be categorized into two; descriptive and
predictive (Bose, 2008). Descriptive data mining provides information concerning the
existing data, while predictive data mining forecasts future events using the data. In other
words, data mining refers to the process of using raw data derived from the database, as well
as from the internal and external sources and analyzing them to form meaningful information
using mathematical processes. The information could be presented in the form of a pattern
and analyzed in a multidimensional manner, through the use of components of traditional
statistics, pattern distribution and artificial intelligence (Bose, 2008). The technology is useful
because it enables the manager to have a better understanding of the present situation and the



possible future events, helping them to make informed decisions and effective strategic
Examples of data mining technologies include the neural network and the Artificial
Intelligence. The neural network functions by performing complex calculations using inputs,
after which it creates outputs that provide information that can be used in making informed
decisions for solving problems effectively. It is often used to perform classification tasks.
This enables the organization to develop artificial technology that can perform tasks on
behalf of human workers, more accurately and faster (Bose, 2008). On the other hand, the
Artificial Intelligence or AI can be used to provide the workers with efficient information and
operations that help them to perform their tasks accurately and more efficiently. In other
words, it simplifies tasks for the employees. Some of the other important features of this
technology include reliability, high performance, high responsiveness and its ease of use
(Bose, 2008). It is also capable of assisting human workers with decision making, advising,
demonstrating, interpreting, diagnosing as well as justifying a conclusion.
All of these features will give the company a strong competitive advantage over the rivaling
CRM as a Source of Sustaining Competitive Advantage
The business world today has become more competitive than ever before. Therefore,
in order to sustain a competitive advantage in the market, the company must invest heavily on
effective strategies for attracting more customers and retaining them. The best way of
achieving this objective is by establishing a robust customer relationship management or



CRM, which includes management, software, and information technology systems (Marolt,
2015). The establishment of an effective system of CRM requires the manager to clearly
define the actual objectives, including the following:
Improving Customer Retention
The CRM can be used to track the experiences of customers, including their interests,
their behaviors, their habits as well as the things that make them angry and happy. Using this
information, the organization is able to deliver products and services that match the
preferences of the customers, thus achieving customer satisfaction and retention.
Improving Profitability
The objective of the organization is not only focused on improving the satisfaction of
the customers, but also on reducing the cost of service for every customer (Bull, 2003). This
helps the company in return by attracting more customers to its affordable and quality
products and services, which results into increased sales and higher profits. The organization
should, therefore, shift its focus towards reducing products and services costs to a level that is
affordable for the majority of customers, as a strategy for gaining competitive advantage in
the market.
