Description

Read Chapter 8

1. Describe a situation in which the nurse manager would use problem resolution in the workplace. Describe a situation in which the nurse manager would use negotiation to resolve a conflict (or potential conflict) in the workplace.

2. Compare and contrast strategies for resolving a conflict, using first the informal negotiation method and then the formal negotiation method.

3. Explore the American Nurses Association website for information on collective bargaining for nurses. Which states have nursing unions? Debate the issue of joining a union with another group of students.

4. PART 1: Log onto the website of your state nurses association and search for information on collective bargaining. Search for news articles, union websites, and other recent information on collective bargaining for nurses in your state. Is there a great deal of collective bargaining activity in your state? If not, why? If yes, what are the primary issues under discussion?

PART 2: Review the pros and cons of becoming part of a collective bargaining unit. If you were a full-time staff nurse, would you want to join a union? Why or why not?

Problem resolution
The major mistake in problem resolution in nursing is trying to establish a solution right
away. This is a big mistake since it attempts to place a solution before the process when what is
required is the solution at the end of the process. It requires that understanding is determined
before the action is taken. One of the instances, when the nursing manager would employ
problem resolution, is when there are insufficient medical drugs, equipment and the number of
people admitted in the wards is overwhelming. The nurse manager in this case can call forth

people from every department with different suggestions to air out ideas and concepts that would
accordingly solve the menace. Ideas and suggestions thrown out during the process of
brainstorming are aimed to create a free-flow pattern of thinking where members of the staff
playoff and build on each other's contributions (Tomey, 2009). During the processes, the nurse
manager will be able to absorb the valid suggestions and approaches that can save a situation as
he/she eliminates ideas that are ineffective.
The other instances where a nurse manager can employ negotiation to solve a conflict is
when there is conflict in the roles of different leaders in various dockets — some medical
practitioners performing tasks that are not obligated to them. The nurse manager will understand
the dynamics of negotiation in areas of leadership and power and later, the healthcare
professionals will improve the excellence of their practice as professionals, their working
environment and their relationships.
Comparing and contrasting strategies for resolving a conflict
Both methods aim at solving the conflict and come up with a solution by trying to
enhance a discussion between two or more persons who are intending to bring a solution to their

disagreements, chose what to do, or do bargaining. However, formal negotiation methods have a
systematic way of handling the discussion and coming up with solutions. For example, formal
negotiating methods may include representatives or advocates. Informal negotiating, on the
contrary, does not require detailed systematic of handling out a negotiation. It may involve
discussion among individuals without necessarily the third party.
The states that have nursing unions based on the American Nurses Association
Collective bargaining is the ongoing process of negotiation between the employers and
the representatives of workers to determine the employee's conditions of nurses. The determined
agreement does cover not only the wages but also the process of hiring, promotions, join
functions, promotions working hours and conditions, worker benefit programs, and worker
discipline and termination. The collectively determined agreement set actual wage rates, rather it
simply determines the minimum wage rates. Therefore, attempts to improve the professional
lives of nurses revolves around gaining collective bargaining rights and advocating for better
working conditions of workers and a general better pay (American Nurses Association, n.d).
Some of the states that have the nursing unions include California, Massachusetts, Minnesota,
Maine, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Kentuck...
