Summary of the Video
Chimamanda Adichie offers a memorable presentation that does not scold the audience for
the lack of knowledge but instead educates the dangers of misunderstandings and limited
perspectives in general. She begins the narration with her background in East Nigeria as an early
reader and writer. Chimamanda explains the limited knowledge that she had on literature, African
Literature, and often incorporated foreign actors in her readings. When she discovered the African
stories from authors such as Chinua Achebe, she realized that the characters are not only limited
to actors with blond and blue eyes but also those with chocolate skin and kinky hair. She further
narrates her experience as she left Nigeria to attend college in the United States. Her roommate
