The film starts with a photograph of a dead man. Leonard, the main character in the movie
Memento, is seen analyzing a previous scene in his mind, whereby a man was shot on the head
from the back. The film then continues, alternating between black and white, and color
sequences. Throughout the film, the audience is constantly drawn back and forth through varying
scenes, an aspect that was well laid out by the casting crew to enhance the theme of the movie.
That is, the character having memory loss condition, is forced to almost desperately relieve some
scenes without even having the knowledge of it having had happened.
Leonard got hit in the head and was injured, hence his condition. He has witnessed the violent
death of his wife and is determined to have vengeance. Since he suffers from short term memory
loss condition, he endeavors to conduct his activities by constantly taking notes and pictures of
places he visits and people he is with. This way he believes he can keep track of his activities,
even with his condition. He has managed to live by making puzzles and playing detective in an
effort to find the guy he believes to have had murdered his wife.
