Slavery is one of the major issues that contributed to the civil war in America. In

America, slavery first started in Virginia in 1619. However, many northern states had abandoned
slavery by the end of the American Revolution, therefore, making it illegal in most northern parts
in the late 18th as well as the early 19th century. In the south, the growth of slavery continued
and flourished in the plantations economy where cultivation of cotton which was a lucrative but
labor-intensive crop was on the rise (McPherson & Davis1988). Due to the fact that the south
possessed a more stratified social structure compared to the North, the southern slaves were held
by a small percentage of the population although slavery in the south enjoyed broad support
across class lines. All sectional conflicts prior to the civil war revolved around the issue of
slavery. This begun with debate on the Constitutional Convention of 1787 which was based on
counting of slaves for the purpose of determining a state’s population for its representation in the
congress.
