Why does a teen at the age of 18 have alcohol in the room?
Given the scope of the society today, the use of alcohol and other drugs is becoming
more rampant. Children are exposed to the use of drugs especially alcohol at very tender ages.
Most of the times, teenagers indulge themselves in activities that drive them to use alcohol
without the knowledge of their parents and guardians. It is considerable to note that children in
their adolescent periods experience a lot of existential conflicts, exposure, and vulnerability to
substance abuse, especially the use of alcohol because they can readily access it. At their age,
teenagers are excited about trying adult activities as they prepare for their transition to adulthood.
In most cases, the teenagers who consume alcohol hide them n their rooms because they do not
want their parents or guardians to know about their newly found alcohol consumption habits
(Evans‐Polce et al. 2017).
Even though the law prohibits alcohol consumption among teenagers, youths under the
age of 21 years are continuously purchasing and consuming alcohols at a high rate with and
without the knowledge of their parents (Evans‐Polce et al. 2017). The teenagers are also involved
in several risky activities that motivate their drinking habits such as binge drinking, attending
parties with alcohol, keeping the company of friends who consume alcohol, and even worse,
taking after their parents who drink alcohol. According to survey conduct by the National Youth
Risk Behavior Surveillance System in 2011, approximately 40% of the United States teenagers,
especially those in high schools use alcohol, and 25% of the teenagers are involved in binge
drinking (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2016). In many cases, teenagers keep alcohol in
their rooms because their parents have failed to provide them with constructive education
concerning alcohol consumption. Most of them hide alcohol in their rooms because their parents
