Instructions The research proposal is an initial assignment that describes/details your project. There are two parts that comprise it: the topic description; a working bibliography of at least 30 potential sources, in Chicago manual style.. Please note: you are not expected to have read all of the sources for the working bibliography. Yo are expected to have sufficiently reviewed them to determine their relevance/appropriateness for the topic. The goal of the research is to explain social justice and how it relates to your field and potential topic choice. Topic: the injustice that occurs to civilians post war and the post war recovery 1. Topic Description: well-developed 2 page document (double spaced) that integrates the following elements: 2. Draft thesis statement 3. Detailed description of the topic including all relevant subtopics, core concepts, relevant related ideas, etc. 4. Discussion of the core idea(s) raised in the “Global Justice” reading that will be the foundation of your project 5. Research Parameters - cultural/country(ies)/global context, etc. 1. Working bibliography: a preliminary bibliography of potential sources that are related to your topic. Again, you are not expected to have read all of the sources at this point. However, you should do an initial screening for topical relevance, potential biases/validity and datedness (is the source too old to be relevant, e.g. statistical/data sources) 2. at least 30 potential sources 3. balance of primary and secondary sources 4. significant number of scholarly (peer reviewed) journals and books as well as webpages, etc. 5. central and all primary subtopics should have multiple sources These two posts describe the idea of the topic selected. You can work based on that or expand on it. 1- The study of Justice is focused on how we treat one another, being fair in all domains. Social justice concentrates on treating everyone fairly no matter their background or affiliation. Now a day this seems easier said than done. On a daily basis we see injustice around us. It can range from a homeless man begging for scraps or even an innocent child on the news trapped in the midst of a war zone or governmental politics. Entering war is never justified when you are thinking of the citizens and what they have to suffer through because of government disputes. When two countries are at war the effects are traumatizing for a society and the recovery is brutal. Homes and people’s lives are destroyed, not to mention the amount of children and families that remain broken after such events. The victims of war have to go through intensive recovery. According to the readings by Brock when referring to war we need consider three things (1) the conditions under which entry into the war is justified (Jus Ad Bellum) and (2) the conditions for fair conduct within the war (Jus In Bello) The third part of just war theory (Jus Post Bellum) concerns how the war concludes and the transition back to a situation of peace. For my research I will mainly be focused on the third part of a just war theory, how the war concludes and the transition back to a situation of peace. For example, the war in Syria and how it affected its people in various ways such as being denied at borders and not being able to work and provide for their families. In conclusion, all human beings should have at least the standard amenities of life, regardless of where they live in this world. At the end, we all share this planet and all it's resources is for everyone to benefit from. In fact, war should never occur to be fair to all from the beginning. References Brock, Gillian, "Global Justice", The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Spring 2017 Edition), Edward N. Zalta (ed.), URL = . 2- After any war that happens, people tend to see only the bright side of the ending. In fact, people tend to be oblivious to post war effects on civilians. Simple things that are considered life standard amenities like paying a visit to the doctor’s office becomes impossible. No matter how strong the people of the country stand, the economic and political situation of their country is going to force them to live less than others on this planet with no valid reason to violate their rights. These people never asked for a war, probably would have done anything to stop it from happening. However, lack of health care is only one of many problems that rise in front of these later on called refugees and be denied at borders of various countries around the world. In a Ted talk about “why Civilians suffer more once a war is over” by Margaret Boudeaux she explains that when there are no security systems the question of security becomes obsolete and not to mention terrifying as there is a change of laws and civil liberties. Your home as you knew it is no longer the same and everything around you is different. The city has been destroyed and it is now that you have to suffer the consequences by rebuilding schools, hospitals and all other institutions that help everyone live their day to day lives. Bring up an interesting point, Liberia had been in a very long civil war which ended in 2003, they had suffered tremendous losses and devastation, 11 years later they were struck by another devastation, Ebola. At that time there was less than 50 doctors for a country of 4.5 million. 11 years later and they still did not have a functioning health system. When that happened they found themselves really suffering the consequences of the war even 11 years later. This comes to tell you that a war is not only temporarily devastating while guns are being fired and bombs are going off, the effects last much longer and affect the civilians more than anyone else. (Bourdeaux, TEDx) During Wars and Civil wars it has been noticed that the main targets seem to be hospitals and medical buildings. For example, in Grozny all seven major hospitals were completely destroyed in Yugoslavia hospitals were routines bombed and physicians and doctors are prime targets for shooters(“War and public health,” 2008). As a matter of a fact, in Civil wars ambulances are generally stopped and or ambushed and of course those who suffer are the citizens. More to mention is the fact that countries are acknowledged with the civilians suffering because of such acts of evil and violence. All in all, wars are never over once one of the countries or both stop fighting. The various effects will remain for a while and might even effect the country’s future system for a long time, especially if the country has no significant natural resource that could help the nation develop more quickly by supplying enough to meet the global demand. A good example of a post war recovery, is the united states of America post second world war. According to the article published by George Mason University (“Economic Recovery: Lessons from the PostWorld War II Period,” 2012), in the period of time from 1944 to 1947 was a time of switch since public spending rapidly increased. That lead to times of prosperity and efficiency, profits started to flow from public use to private. References Bourdeaux, M. (n.d.). Why civilians suffer more once a war is over. Justice is a concept of ethics. It means that people behave in a fair and just manner. The
study of ethics, on the other hand, is focused on how we treat each other in all the aspects of life.
Social justice is the giving of each and every person equal opportunities no matter the differences
in wealth or opportunities. This is important as it can help society grow. A just society is bound
to experience peace. Peace comes with the accommodation of everyone and giving people equal
opportunities. As a result, the society grows. However, there are a lot of injustices in the society
today. These injustices range from a woman getting raped on the streets and nothing is done
about it or a child trapped in the middle of a war. Both of these people were not given a chance
and this is therefore considered unfair.
War. When one stops and thinks about war, he or she will probably come to the
conclusion that the country is experiencing political instability. This can be caused by terrorist
activities or government differences between two countries. However, war is not justified. This is
backed up by the fact that innocent people suffer the consequences. The effects of war are
usually very traumatizing. People are displaced from their homes as some of them are escaping
the war, people lose their loved ones and property is destroyed. War also leads to the decline of
economic activities and to the massive deaths of people. These victims of war have to go through
intensive recovery to try and win themselves off the trauma of what happened. Some of these
people end up never getting any better. They begin having mental issues, some of them suffer
from PTSD. The effects of war are far fetching and the most saddening thing is that people don't
usually realize this.
Different countries have experienced different results of war but the fact still remains that
wars usually end up with traumatizing effects. Think about all the refugees who were displaced
from their homes because of wars. The hardships they face and the hardships these hosting

countries face to fulfill their necessities. It is therefore important for people to understand the
effects of war. These are the injustices that occur to civilians post-war and the post-war recovery.
For this research, I will focus more on how the war ends and the journey back to obtain a
peaceful society. For example, the war in Syria affected people in different ways. Some of these
people were denied entry into some countries. This ensured that they had nothing to provide for
their families. I believe that every human being should at least have the standard amenities of life
regardless of where they live in this world. Furthermore, these people are entitled since they are
not responsible for the war and cannot be ruled out as criminals. This paper will focus on social
justice and the opportunities these post-war civilians are denied.

Sociologist Mani based on her research states that for justice to be served to these postwar civilians, there must be a mutual agreement. This is to help with their recovery.
