Question Description

Topic should be at least 350 words and should reflect the fact that you have completed the readings and activities. Use your words wisely so that the posting has substance and includes examples and explanations. Best practice is to include citations and a reference list.

It is essential when beginning your practice to understand the many ways in which dual relationships and opportunities for ethical violations can present themselves. Remaining aware of potential problem areas will prepare you to recognize them when they present themselves to you. To gain additional practice in this area, in your discussion you will analyze a case study to evaluate whether the actions presented are consistent with the NOHS Standards for Human Service Professionals.

Choose one case example from the text that you have not previously evaluated on the Discussion Board. It can involve any type of dual relationship or boundary violation discussed in the text, Boundary Issues and Dual Relationships in the Human Services. Please choose a different case than is discussed by your classmates. Respond to the following questions:

CASE 4.2 Sam G. was a psychiatrist who provided medication, advice, and counseling to Anna C., a woman who sought his help because of her symptoms of depression. Over a period of months, the relationship between Dr. G. and Ms. C. moved gradually from a purely professional-client relationship to a sexual affair. During their affair Ms. C. received a notice of foreclosure on her home. Because of her depression Ms. C. had missed a considerable amount of work. As a result, she was fired from the insurance company where she had been employed and fell behind on her mortgage payments. Ms. C. owed her bank approximately $7,300. After Ms. C. told Dr. G. about the foreclosure, Dr. G. wrote Ms. C. a check for the amount she owed the bank. After their intimate relationship fell apart, Ms. C. filed an ethics complaint and lawsuit against Dr. G. One piece of evidence introduced in court by Ms. C.’s attorney, in her effort to demonstrate the psychiatrist’s negligent handling of boundary issues, was a photocopy of the canceled check that Dr. G. had made out to Ms. C.

Describe the case you have chosen, outlining all ethical issues presented by the actions of the human services professional.

Analyze the actions in light of your readings and the NOHS Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals.

Outline how you would handle the situation differently from the practitioner in the example.

Finally, suggest some ways in which the astute and ethical human service professional can prevent such a situation from developing by being aware and proactive in his or her practice.
