MAT 120 Project 1

Name: __________________________________________Score: ________________

Find a data set, from one of the listed database sources, perhaps related to your field of interest. Your data set must include at least n = 25 data points, only one variable. You may search for your data set at the College library website data resources. Your data must be quantitative (not qualitative.) Fill out this form and submit to your instructor in class on the due date.

Part 1:

Use Blackboard, Course Content, Unit 1, Submit Minitab Express project, to submit the Minitab Express project through Blackboard, Unit 1  (15 pts).  Once I grade your entire project, you will see a check mark in My Grades in Blackboard, but this Part 1 is weighted at 15 pts out of 100 for this project and will be included in the final grade for Project 1.

Part 2:

You must use Minitab Express for this project.

Identify your variable and include some explanation of the variable: (5 pts)

List your data set. Copy and paste from your Minitab Express worksheet (4 pts)

Explain why one should think that your data are credible, reliable and current. (If you decide that the source is not credible, you may still use it for the purposes of this assignment.) (6 pts)

Explain why one should think that your data are unbiased. (7 pts)

Cite the source of your data using the APA format. (See page 188, #48, in your textbook for an example of an APA citation.) (5 pts)

Give the mean, standard deviation, and variance of your data.  Please include the symbol if it exists (9 pts)

MAT 120 029 Project 1 Directions Project 1 is due on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 with no late projects accepted. This project will be graded on 100 point scale and will count 4% of your final grade. Project 1 is required for MAT 120. Find a data set, perhaps from a journal article related to your desired career. Your data set must include at least n = 25 data points, only one quantitative variable. You will search for your data set at the College library website data resources, or from one of the two sites listed below. Your data must be quantitative (not qualitative). Note that you may have to “clean up” data files before you can present them and use them in your software. For example, Minitab Express will not take a comma (,) within a number.   American Petroleum Institute statistics, https://www.api.org/products-andservices/statistics#tab-surveys Data Hub, https://datahub.io/collections There are two parts of this project to submit. The first part will be to submit the Minitab Express project through Blackboard (directions are posted in Blackboard, Course Content, Unit 1). The second part will be the project 1 in written or typed form on the document provided – questions are posted in Blackboard. Please use this form to submit your answers. Part 1: You must use Minitab Express for this project. After you find your data set, enter the data in the Minitab Express worksheet. Make sure you enter the name of the variable in the proper area on the worksheet. Then do the following: Minitab Express Directions: 1. Open Minitab Express and enter your data in a single column in the worksheet. 2. Enter a variable name in the appropriate area of the worksheet. 3. Statistics, Describe, Descriptive Statistics, all data in one column, double click the variable in the variable box, click Statistics at top of Dialogue box, uncheck SE Mean, check Variance, check Interquartile Range, click ok 4. Graph, Histogram, single y, simple, click on the variable, click ok. Change the binning if necessary to make sense with data. Choose either midpoint or cutpoint This is an independent project. The only person who may help you on this project is your teacher. Do not get help from tutors, other students, etc. 5. 6. 7. 8. to make sense with the data. To do this, click inside of the graph on the white part, then click the plus sign. Graph, Box Plot, single y, simple, double click on the variable, click ok. File, Save as, and save your project to your computer or a USB. Follow the directions in Blackboard to submit the Minitab Express Project. This will be like you submitted the Student Information sheet. Keep your Minitab Express project so you answer the questions on the word document provided in Blackboard. Some items you can copy and paste into the word document. Part 2: The second part of the project, you will fill out the word document as provided to answer the following questions. You can copy and paste the graphs into the word document. You can either type or hand write in the rest of the project. Please make sure I can read all the material. When you are finished, please print out your project and hand to me in class on the due date. For the writing parts, please use complete sentences and use the context of the variable. Here is a summary of what is on the form: 1. Identify your variable. 2. List your data set 3. Explain why one should think that your data are credible, reliable and current. (If you decide that the source is not credible, you may still use it for the purposes of this assignment.) 4. Explain why one should think that your data are unbiased. 5. Cite the source of your data using the APA format. (See page 188, #48, in your textbook for an example of an APA citation.) 6. Give the mean, standard deviation, and variance of your data 7. Give the five-number summary and IQR of your data 8. What outliers are in your data set, if any? Calculate fences and show your work. You may check your work with the box plot (box-and-whisker) plot in #10. 9. Present a histogram for your data. 10. Present a box-and-whiskers plot for your data. 11. Verbally describe the center, spread, and shape of your data. 12. Conclusion: What have you learned about data and statistical analysis? This is an independent project. The only person who may help you on this project is your teacher. Do not get help from tutors, other students, etc.

Tutor went the extra mile to help me with this essay. Citations were a bit shaky but I appreciated how well he handled APA styles and how ok he was to change them even though I didnt specify. Got a B+ which is believable and acceptable.
