Should We KEEP Or KILL The Smallpox Virus Research Stockpiles?
Should We KEEP Or KILL The Smallpox Virus Research Stockpiles?
Death Sentence for a Virus? Should we KEEP or KILL the smallpox virus research stockpiles? The last known naturally occurring case of smallpox occurred in 1977. A world-wide vaccination effort lead to the natural eradication of the disease—a viral condition that causes painful “pustules” to appear over a person’s body—and the scientific world considered it to be the first great human victory against viruses. While the virus appears to have been eradicated from the natural world, small stockpiles of viral cultures have been maintained since the ‘70’s at the Center’s for Disease Control (CDC) research lab in Atlanta, GA, USA, and at a research lab in Russia. While these stockpiles exist, the virus itself still exists. Your question: Should we KEEP or KILL these last remnants of the smallpox virus? You can use the t-chart below to guide your discussion and thoughts as you read through the articles on the history and effects of the smallpox virus and the positives and negatives of having the virus available in research labs. You do not need to turn this paper in! Your dilemma discussion should be 2-3 typed, double spaced pages. Use APA format. Length is not as important as content. I want to know what you think and why. Provide examples from the readings to support your thoughts! You may use additional sources so long as you cite them. Sources: • • • •
