Course Description: This course is designed to provide
an understanding of staffing and performance
management as elements of effective labor and human
resource practice. The emphasis is on the acquisition,
deployment and retention of a workforce in sufficient
quantity and quality to improve organizational
effectiveness, as well as to satisfy worker and community
needs. The course will address such issues as the link
between staffing and organizational strategy, human
resource planning, job analysis, recruitment and selection
of employees, methods and techniques of performance
appraisal, strategies for improving performance,
employment law, and the deterioration of job quality.
Learning Outcomes: The students will have an
opportunity to learn
To apply concepts and theories related to staffing, job
analysis and performance management to contemporary,
complex human resource staffing decisions.
To identify effective strategies for attracting and retaining
employees.
To evaluate the hiring and performance evaluation
process and its outcomes.
To learn techniques that will increase the reliability of the
evaluation process.
To present complex material related to staffing and
performance appraisal management in oral and written
formats.
Method of Teaching: The methods of teaching include
lectures, class discussions, case studies, written
assignments, relevant videos and a research project.
Measurement of Learning Outcomes:
The evaluation will be based on the following:
Research Project: Guidelines for the research project are
separately available. The students are expected to design
and complete a field project or literature review.
Attendance Policy: Attendance is required. Two
unexcused absences are allowed. Prior information and
arrangements must be made if you have to miss a
presentation, otherwise you may lose credit for that
presentation. If you have more than three unexcused
absences, you may lose points allocated to attendance
and participation. In case of more than five absences, you
may be dropped from the course. It is not allowed to
come late to the class. You may not be allowed in the
class after the scheduled time. Late submission of
assignments after the deadline is not allowed, resulting in
loss of credit for that assignment.
