One cannot simply talk about the negative impacts of deforestation without mentioning
its effect to the carbon cycle, hydro cycle and to the diversity of species. According to Skole, et
al (1993), deforestation plays a key role in the carbon cycle and directly affects the diversity of
species. The need for natural resources by human beings has resulted in a big percentage of trees
being cut down and forests being cleared. As a result, processes that are essential for the
sustainability of this earth have been disrupted. The carbon cycle refers to the process of
recycling and reusing carbon in the biosphere and also the long-term processing carbon
sequestration to and from carbon sinks. In general, the carbon cycle consists of a series of events
that are essential for the sustainability of life on this earth. In regards to the carbon cycle, it is
because of trees and other vegetation that there is a balance of the amount of carbon present in
the atmosphere. However, since a lot of trees are cut down without being replaced or are
replaced by eco-systems that are not as productive, the balance of carbon in the atmosphere is
slowly starting to tip towards the higher scale and man-kind may have to endure the greenhouse
effect. The hydro cycle, also called the water cycle, refers to the constant circulation of water in
the earth atmospheric system. The hydro cycle is achieved as a resolved of a number of
processes namely evaporation, condensation, precipitation, transpiration and surface runoff.
Despite the amount of water involved in the cycle stays fixed, how it is distributed among the
processes has been constantly changing as a result of a number of factors and one of them is
decline in vegetation. Forests play a key role in the hydro cycle as they help in the transportation
