Atherosclerosis is a condition affecting both adolescents and adults, in which the walls of
arteries thicken because of a build-up of fatty materials, such as cholesterol (Kakadiya, 2009).
The condition affects the arterial blood vessels, making them thick, reducing the blood passage
and thus increasing the blood pressure. Atherosclerosis arises when low-density lipoproteins are
oxidized by oxygen free radicles, which then leads to the destruction of the walls of the arteries
(Kakadiya, 2009). Once the walls of the arteries have been destroyed, white blood cells are
produced in response, they are not used up but accumulate on the walls of the artery (Kakadiya,
2009). The accumulation of the white blood cells is thus responsible for the swelling of the artery
